Propers for the Sixth Sunday after Trinity.

The Book of Common Prayer 1928.

The Collect.

O GOD, who hast prepared for those who love thee such good things as pass man’s understanding; Pour into our hearts such love toward thee, that we, loving thee above all things, may obtain thy promises, which exceed all that we can desire; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Epistle. Romans vi. 3.

KNOW ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death? Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death, we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection: knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin. For he that is dead is freed from sin. Now if we be dead with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with him: knowing that Christ being raised from the dead dieth no more; death hath no more dominion over him. For in that he died, he died unto sin once: but in that he liveth, he liveth unto God. Likewise reckon ye also yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord.

The Gospel. St. Matthew v. 20.

JESUS said unto his disciples, Except your righteousness shall exceed the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, ye shall in no case enter into the kingdom of heaven. Ye have heard that it was said by them of old time, Thou shalt not kill; and whosoever shall kill shall be in danger of the judgment: but I say unto you, that whosoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment: and whosoever shall say to his brother, Raca, shall be in danger of the council: but whosoever shall say, Thou fool, shall be in danger of hell-fire. Therefore if thou bring thy gift to the altar, and there rememberest that thy brother hath ought against thee; leave there thy gift before the altar, and go thy way; first be reconciled to thy brother, and then come and offer thy gift. Agree with thine adversary quickly, whiles thou art in the way with him; lest at any time the adversary deliver thee to the judge, and the judge deliver thee to the officer, and thou be cast into prison. Verily I say unto thee, Thou shalt by no means come out thence, till thou hast paid the uttermost farthing.

Watch this Sunday’s live-stream!

The upcoming YouTube live-stream will always be found at “Watch this Sunday’s live-stream,” accessible from the menu bar at the top of the website home page. If we are not doing a live-stream for any reason, there will be a link to a past Sunday service to aid in your worship if you aren’t able to be with us in person.

If a live-stream of a Sunday service is accomplished, the audio of that Sunday’s sermon will usually be posted sometime Sunday evening on the media page on our website.

Our website is found at cca-nc.org.  It’s our “one-stop shop” for information about Christ Church Anglican.

On any given day, check our “Current operating status” – in other words, whether or not the church is open for services or office hours, in case of inclement weather or unusual episodes (like the sabotage of transformers a few years ago). Check for changes to the service schedule (to include seasonal services such as Holy Week and Christmas) at Services and Office Hours.

The weekly parish email is reproduced on the blog page.

And lastly…if you ever want to ask a question, make a comment, contact someone about a ministry opportunity…please drop us a line using our church contact page. We’ll get your question or concern directed to the right person.

To volunteer for our media team, please contact our IT/AV/Social media specialist, John Fesq, at video.christchurchanglican@gmail.com.

Announcements for the Week of Sunday, July 27th, 2025

If you are visiting us: Welcome to Christ Church Anglican, Southern Pines! Thank you for being with us. We are very pleased to have you join us for the service, and hope that your worship here is a blessing to you. Please sign the guest book on the table in the narthex, and if you wish, share your email or other contact information with us. And may God bless you!

Midweek (Wednesday) Eucharist: We offer a service of Holy Communion – also known as the Holy Eucharist, the Lord’s Supper, or the Mass) at 10:00 on Wednesday mornings. Please note that this service includes an opportunity for the laying on of hands and anointing with oil for healing, for those who may desire this ministry. The Propers and Homily for the Wednesday service typically commemorate a saint whose day falls in that week.

Altar Guild: The Altar Guild is a lay ministry with a vocation to serve God in His house by preparing the Sanctuary for worship, maintaining and caring for the sacred vessels, altar linens, and vestments, and related duties as needed. Serving on the Altar Guild is a form of religious vocation, and a sacred responsibility. If you feel called to this mission and ministry within Christ Church Anglican, please contact Sandy Parsons via our church contact page.

Altar Flowers: We will be taking a break from flowers for at least the remainder of the summer, and possibly Trinitytide season; however, if anyone wishes to donate altar flowers to the glory of God or in honour or memory of a loved one, please contact Fr. Tom, Amanda, or Austin via church contact page.

Our Statue – Christus Consolator / Christ the Healer: The statue of our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ, appearing atop the aumbry to the right of the altar, is a replica of the Christus Consolator (“Christ the Comforter”), sculpted in marble by Danish Lutheran sculptor Bertel Thorvaldsen in 1833. The original is located in the Church of Our Lady, an Evangelical Lutheran Church of Denmark in Copenhagen.

A full-sized (11 feet in height!) replica appears in the lobby of Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland, where it is known as “Christ the Divine Healer,” and has provided inspiration, hope, and consolation to many. Having it above the aumbry here at Christ Church, wherein are stored our healing oils, seems exceptionally appropriate! Our statue is on loan from our pianist and choir director, Amanda LeVasseur Harbold.

Sandhills Student Assistance: Our parish continues to support Sandhills Student Assistance, also known as the “Matthew 25:40 Project.” Fr. Tom sits on the Board of the SSA, which provides focused, immediate assistance to disadvantaged and at-risk students in Moore County. While various types of aid have been provided to students and their families, the primary focus is on providing food to students who may not be eating well (or at all) at home, to enable them to continue learning effectively. Currently on the list of requested donations are following individually-packaged food items, which can be placed in the wicker box in our social hall:

  • Breakfast bars
  • Pastry crisps
  • Cracker packs
  • Capri Sun juice packs
  • Protein bars
  • Microwaveable noodle bowls
  • Trail mix

Sandhills Student Assistance provides approximately 175 shelf-stable food items for hungry students each school day, across Moore County. Please note that the actual need of these students is vetted by their school guidance counselors and social workers, not by Sandhills Student Assistance: we only get asked when there is a genuine, determined need.
