Propers for the Twentieth Sunday after Trinity.

The Collect.
O ALMIGHTY and most merciful God, of thy bountiful goodness keep us, we beseech thee, from all things that may hurt us; that we, being ready both in body and soul, may cheerfully accomplish those things which thou commandest; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
The Epistle. Ephesians v. 15.
SEE then that ye walk circumspectly, not as fools, but as wise, redeeming the time, be cause the days are evil. Wherefore be ye not unwise, but under-standing what the will of the Lord is. And be not drunk with wine, where in is excess; but be filled with the Spirit; speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord; giving thanks always for all things unto God and the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ; submit ting yourselves one to another in the fear of God.
The Gospel. Matthew xxii. 1.
JESUS said, The kingdom of heaven is like unto a certain king, which made a marriage for his son, and sent forth his servants to call them that were bidden to the wedding: and they would not come. Again, he sent forth other servants saying, Tell them which are bidden, Behold, I have prepared my dinner: my oxen and my fatlings are killed, and all things are ready: come unto the marriage. But they made light of it, and went their ways, one to his farm, another to his merchandise: and the remnant took his servants, and entreated them spitefully, and slew them. But when the king heard thereof, he was wroth: and he sent forth his armies, and destroyed those murderers, and burned up their city. Then saith he to his servants, The wedding is ready, but they which were bidden were not worthy. Go ye therefore into the highways, and as many as ye shall find, bid to the marriage. So those servants went out into the highways, and gathered together all as many. as they found, both bad and good: and the wedding was furnished with guests. And when the king came in to see the guests, he saw there a man which had not on a wedding garment: and he saith unto him, Friend, how camest thou in hither not having a wedding garment? And he was speechless. Then said the king to the servants, Bind him hand and foot, and take him away, and cast him into outer darkness; there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth. For many are called, but few are chosen.

Announcements for the Week of October 13, 2024
If you are visiting us: Welcome to Christ Church Anglican, Southern Pines! Thank you for being with us. We are very pleased to have you join us for the service, and hope that your worship here is a blessing to you. Please sign the guest book on the table in the narthex, and provide appropriate contact information. Include your email address in order to be placed on our parish email list: you won’t be bombarded with mail, but it’s a good way to keep in touch. And may God bless you!
Monthly Vestry Meeting: Our regular monthly Vestry meeting for October, 2024, will be Saturday the 19th. If you are an elected member of the Vestry or an appointed parish officer, please make plans to attend. All parishioners are welcome to attend Vestry meetings if they so desire: the Vestry is the lay governing body of the parish, elected by the parish as a whole at the Annual Meeting – by attending, you get to see how your representatives do their job!
Diocesan Synod next week: The Annual Synod of the Diocese of the Holy Cross will be held on Wednesday, October 23rd – Thursday, October 24th. Fr. Tom will attend, Lord willing, as will George (in his capacity as a member of the Standing Committee of the DHC). We are entitled to up to three lay delegates from Christ Church parish. They do not have to be present at the Synod! Although of course, you are welcome and encouraged to attend in person if you wish; it’s a good chance to get to meet other folks from our jurisdiction, both lay and clergy. But it is not necessary to be there in person: there is a proxy form that may be filled out. If you are interested, please see Fr. Tom or George following the service this morning.
Relief for Western North Carolina – Samaritan’s Purse Appeal: Many thanks to those who have donated to the funds our parish will be sending to Samaritan’s Purse for the relief of the victims of Western North Carolina, and to any who may choose to do so. This appeal will continue for the remainder of the month of October. Samaritan’s Purse is a Christian humanitarian organization located in Boone, NC, in the heart of the area devastated by Hurricane Helene.
While everyone is of course free to donate as you see fit, we are collecting funds to donate to Samaritan’s Purse as a parish, in the name of Christ Church Anglican: please write “Hurricane Relief for Western NC” on your checks made out to our parish (or an envelope containing cash, if you so choose) and place them in the offering plate, or give them to our Treasurer, Bud Saulsbury, or to Fr. Tom. We will be collecting through the last Sunday of the month, October 27th. Thank you for your generous contributions to assist our neighbors to the west, who are dealing with devastation to not only their homes and livelihoods, but in many case, whole communities.
Additional options for relief donations are listed on our website and Facebook page. As regards in-kind donations, I am told that blankets and sleeping bags are particularly needed at present, as the weather is starting to turn decidedly cold in the mountains, with overnight lows dropping into the 40s and even lower. And of course, please continue to pray, both for those living and working in the affected area, and for those who are working to help them!
