Parish Announcements for the week of September 1st, 2024.

Although we generally don’t think of Fall beginning until the Autumn Equinox (which this year falls on Sunday, September 22nd) – and there is a joke that here in the South, one of the best ways to deal with Summer heat is to stay inside from 11 o’clock in the morning until November 1st – meteorologists reckon the season of Autumn as including the months of September, October, and November. So as of this Sunday, we will be in “meteorological Autumn”!

There are signs and signals of this, made visible in God’s good Creation: some birds have already begun their migrations, and others will, soon; leaves of certain trees are beginning to yellow and spiral toward the ground; the quality and angle of light is changing, even as the length of days visible shortens; and we even, a week or two ago, saw the first significant moderation in temperature – even though it shot back up again this week, next week is supposed to be cooler once again.

And in our Church year, we are also seeing changes: while we are still in the middle of the long, green season of Trinitytide, we are actually past the midpoint, now; we are “over the hump,” as it were, and from here we will begin to look ahead toward the ecclesiastical “new year” which is the first Sunday of Advent. This year, that day is also the celebration our 20th anniversary as a parish, Christ Church having been launched on Advent Sunday in 2004!

But now I am beginning to get a bit ahead of myself. We’ve still got a good ways to go, before we get to that point; no need to rush it! In any case, I hope and pray that everyone will have a good week this week, and a good and blessed second half of the season of Trinitytide.

Faithfully,
Fr. Tom Harbold

Propers for the Fourteenth Sunday after Trinity.

The Book of Common Prayer 1928.

The Collect.

ALMIGHTY and everlasting God, give unto us the increase of faith, hope, and charity; and, that we may obtain that which thou dost promise, make us to love that which thou dost command; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Epistle. Galatians v. 16.

I SAY then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh. For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would. But if ye be led of the Spirit, ye are not under the law. Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God. But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance: against such there is no law. And they that are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts.

The Gospel. Luke x. 23.

AND it came to pass, as Jesus went to Jerusalem, that he passed through the midst of Samaria and Galilee. And as he entered into a certain village, there met him ten men that were lepers, which stood afar off: and they lifted up their voices, and said, Jesus, Master, have mercy on us. And when he saw them, he said unto them, Go shew yourselves unto the priests And it came to pass, that, as they went, they were cleansed. And one of them, when he saw that he was healed, turned back, and with a loud voice glorified God, and fell down on his face at his feet, giving him thanks: and he was a Samaritan. And Jesus answering said, Were there not ten cleansed? but where are the nine? There are not found that returned to give glory to God, save this stranger. And he said unto him, Arise, go thy way thy faith hath made thee whole.

Important Announcement and Update:

We have a new website!

The new website is live and may be found at cca-nc.org. Many thanks to John Fesq, our website and IT/social media coordinator, for all the hard work he has put into this! This website should simplify and streamline our information-sharing quite a bit, including the fact that our most current YouTube live-stream will always be found at “Watch this Sunday’s live-stream,” accessible from the menu-bar at the top of the page.

Watch this Sunday’s live-stream

The website is also a place to check our “Current operating status” – in other words, whether or not the church is open for services, in case of inclement weather (or unusual episodes like the sabotage of transformers a few years ago). If in doubt, check us out! Other options include Meet Our Clergy, Who We Are, Services and Office Hours, and How to find us.

All of these links can also be found by scrolling down the main page, as can also sections on “Find Your Place” – ministries of the parish, which you may wish to join – “Recent Media,” both video and audio, and “Recent Posts” on our nascent blog page. The goal is for this to become a “one-stop shop” for information about Christ Church Anglican.

If you have any questions or issues, please contact our media team at [email protected]. And if you wish to volunteer for our media team, please contact our IT/AV/Social media specialist, John Fesq, at [email protected].

Announcements for the Week of August 25th, 2024

If you are visiting us: Welcome to Christ Church Anglican, Southern Pines! Thank you for being with us. We are very pleased to have you join us for the service, and hope that your worship here is a blessing to you. Please sign the guest book on the table in the narthex, and provide appropriate contact information. Include your email address in order to be placed on our parish email list: you won’t be bombarded with mail, but it’s a good way to keep in touch. And may God bless you!

Ordo Calendars: Please contact Susan Saulsbury as soon as possible, if you wish to order an Ordo Calendar to assist you in keeping track of holy days – both feasts and fasts – and the cycles and seasons of the Church year.

Security Reminder: Please remember to lock your car doors before you come into the church, and do not leave valuables in your car – especially if visible! Thank you. Also, please check your license plates to make sure that you have not inadvertently “expired”! 🙂

Fellowship Meals: We are very grateful for all those who have been contributing to our fellowship meal after the service, and we invite anyone who wishes to share a favorite meal or dish with our fellow-parishioners to sign up on the list hanging next to the back counter in our fellowship area.

It is encouraged to have several people sign up and provide a “potluck style” meal to make it easier on individuals, and more cost-effective. However, those who wist to provide all courses for a meal are always welcomed and appreciated.

And if anyone wishes to donate toward the cost of plates, napkins, flatware, salad dressings, drinks, or other incidentals, there will be a jar (or jars) on the back counter for that purpose. Many thanks to all!

Fresh Eggs: A reminder that fresh, home-raised eggs are still available from one of our esteemed members, Michele Burdick, who requests a donation to the church of $5/dozen. Thanks, Michele!

Communion Reminder: Ladies are asked to please remember to remove lipstick before drinking from the chalice.
