Propers for the Eleventh Sunday after Trinity.

The Book of Common Prayer 1928.

  The Collect.

O GOD, who declarest thy almighty power chiefly in showing mercy and pity; Mercifully grant unto us such a measure of thy grace, that we, running the way of thy commandments, may obtain thy gracious promises, and be made partakers of thy heavenly treasure; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Epistle. 1 Corinthians xv. 1.

BRETHREN, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; by which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; and that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures: and that he was seen of Cephas, then of the twelve: after that, he was seen of above five hundred brethren at once; of whom the greater part remain unto this present, but some are fallen asleep. After that, he was seen of James; then of all the apostles. And last of all he was seen of me also, as of one born out of due time. For I am the least of the apostles, that am not meet to be called an apostle, because I persecuted the church of God. But by the grace of God I am what I am: and his grace which was bestowed upon me was not in vain; but I laboured more abundantly than they all: yet not I, but the grace of God which was with me. Therefore whether it were I or they, so we preach, and so ye believed.

The Gospel. St. Luke xviii. 9.

JESUS spake this parable unto certain which trusted in themselves that they were righteous, and despised others: Two men went up into the temple to pray; the one a Pharisee, and the other a publican. The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, God, I thank thee, that I am not as other men are, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this publican. I fast twice in the week, I give tithes of all that I possess. And the publican, standing afar off, would not lift up so much as his eyes unto heaven, but smote upon his breast, saying, God be merciful to me a sinner. I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other: for every one that exalteth himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted.

The service of Holy Communion, 10:30 a.m. on Sundays, is broadcast weekly via YouTube and on our website:

Watch this Sunday’s live-stream!

The upcoming YouTube live-stream will always be found at “Watch this Sunday’s live-stream,” accessible from the menu bar at the top of the website home page. If we are not doing a live-stream for any reason, there will be a link to a past Sunday service to aid in your worship if you aren’t able to be with us in person.

If a live-stream of a Sunday service is accomplished, the audio of that Sunday’s sermon will usually be posted sometime Sunday evening on the media page on our website.

Our website is found at cca-nc.org.  It’s our “one-stop shop” for information about Christ Church Anglican.

On any given day, check our “Current operating status” – in other words, whether or not the church is open for services or office hours, in case of inclement weather or unusual episodes (like the sabotage of transformers a few years ago). Check for changes to the service schedule (to include seasonal services such as Holy Week and Christmas) at Services and Office Hours.

The weekly parish email is reproduced on the blog page.

And lastly…if you ever want to ask a question, make a comment, contact someone about a ministry opportunity…please drop us a line using our church contact page. We’ll get your question or concern directed to the right person.

To volunteer for our media team, please contact our IT/AV/Social media specialist, John Fesq, at video.christchurchanglican@gmail.com.

Announcements for the Week of Sunday, August 31st, 2025
(Eleventh Sunday after Trinity)

If you are visiting us: Welcome to Christ Church Anglican, Southern Pines! Thank you for being with us. We are very pleased to have you join us for the service, and hope that your worship here is a blessing to you. Please sign the guest book on the table in the narthex, and if you wish, share your email or other contact information with us. And may God bless you!

Your prayers are requested for the peaceful repose of Fletcher Merkel (8), and Harper Moyski (10), and for God’s peace and comfort for their families; for the speedy recovery of those who were injured, and for all those, both children and adults, traumatized by the tragic attack on Annunciation Roman Catholic church and school. Please pray also for the safety of all students here in Moore County schools, both public and private, and also all Moore County churches.

Midweek (Wednesday) Eucharist: We offer a service of Holy Communion – also known as the Holy Eucharist, the Lord’s Supper, or the Mass) at 10:00 on Wednesday mornings. Please note that this service includes an opportunity for the laying on of hands and anointing with oil for healing, for those who may desire this ministry. The Propers and Homily for the Wednesday service typically commemorate a saint whose day falls in that week.

Support for Christian Missions: Our brother in Christ and former assistant, Fr. John Taylor Brantley, now Bishop Brantley of the Evangelical & Reformed Synod (see below), who will be helping us get our classical Christian education program started, is preparing for a mission trip to Africa in September, and asks, “Would Christ Church be willing to purchase a few Bibles for us to take to Africa?” He then provided a list with Bibles in the Swahili and Ganda languages, adding, “Any help would be appreciated.”

Given the help he has been, and continues to be, to us, I think it would be nice if we were able to send him off to Africa with a small stack of Holy Scriptures! It should be noted that the E&R Synod provides needed items – such as Bibles – not raw funds, to their member parishes abroad, to ensure accountability and that funds are not diverted. If you are willing to assist in this endeavor, please contact me (Fr. Tom) for further specifics.

Sandhills Student Assistance: Our parish continues to support Sandhills Student Assistance, also known as the “Matthew 25:40 Project.” Fr. Tom sits on the Board of the SSA, which provides focused, immediate assistance to disadvantaged and at-risk students in Moore County. While Sandhills Student Assistance has provided various types of aid to students and their families, including hygiene packs, school supplies, and even clothes and shoes, the primary focus is on providing food to students who may not be eating well (or at all) at home, to enable them to have the mental acuity and attentiveness to continue learning effectively. Currently on the list of requested donations are individually-packaged food items, which can be placed in the wicker box in our social hall:

• Breakfast bars
• Pastry crisps
• Cracker packs
• Capri Sun juice packs
• Protein bars
• Microwaveable noodle bowls
• Trail mix

Sandhills Student Assistance provides approximately 175 shelf-stable food items for hungry students each school day, across Moore County. Please note that the actual need of these students is vetted by their school guidance counselors and social workers, not by Sandhills Student Assistance: we only get asked when there is a genuine, determined need.

Christian EducationWe’re excited to announce an upcoming, 14-week long opportunity for Christian Education here at Christ Church Anglican.

Starting on September 21, John Fesq will be facilitating the viewing of a series of Sunday School class videos from Holy Trinity Reformed Episcopal Church in Fairfax, VA.  The class is an introduction to one of the works of Richard Hooker, who was an English Reformer in the mid to late 1500’s.  In particular, we will be exposed to Book Five of his “Laws of Ecclesiastical Polity”.  The class will look at the Anglican underpinnings and viewpoints of such topics as:

-Worship
-Church buildings and settings
-Preaching
-The Book of Common Prayer
-Liturgy
-Sacraments
-Traditional ceremonies and services
-Ministry

The class will be viewed after Sunday service outside the sanctuary on our big television screen, after we’ve had time to fellowship for a little bit.  The classes tend to run 45 minutes to an hour, not including any discussion we’d like to have afterwards.

Folks have been asking for Christian Education for a while, and this is our best effort to “jump start” that effort with a course that we hope you will find interesting, informative and edifying.  It’s the intention to use this time to also begin the process of asking “what would we like to study after this?”.  We encourage you to plan to make time after Sunday services to stay and learn with us!
