Propers for the Twenty-first Sunday after Trinity.

The Book of Common Prayer 1928.

The Collect.
GRANT, we beseech thee, merciful Lord, to thy faithful people pardon and peace, that they may be cleansed from all their sins, and serve thee with a quiet mind; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
The Epistle. Ephesians vi. 10.

MY brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might. Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness; and your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace; above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked. And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God: praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints; and for me, that utterance may be given unto me, that I may open my mouth boldly, to make known the mystery of the gospel, for which I am an ambassador in bonds: that therein I may speak boldly, as I ought to speak.

The Gospel. John iv. 46.

THERE was a certain nobleman, whose son was sick at Capernaum. When he heard that Jesus was come out of Judæa into Galilee, he went unto him, and besought him that he would come down, and heal his son: for he was at the point of death. Then said Jesus unto him, Except ye see signs and wonders, ye will not believe. The nobleman saith unto him, Sir, come down ere my child die. Jesus saith unto him, Go thy way: thy son liveth. And the man believed the word that Jesus had spoken unto him, and he went his way. And as he was now going down, his servants met him, and told him, saying, Thy son liveth. Then enquired he of them the hour when he began to amend. And they said unto him, Yesterday at the seventh hour the fever left him. So the father knew that it was at the same hour, in the which Jesus said unto him, Thy son liveth: and himself believed, and his whole house. This is again the second miracle that Jesus did, when he was come out of Judæa into Galilee.

Watch this Sunday’s live-stream!

Our new website is live and may be found at cca-nc.org. This website should simplify and streamline our information-sharing quite a bit, including the fact that our most current YouTube live-stream will always be found at “Watch this Sunday’s live-stream,” accessible from the menu-bar at the top of the page.

The website is also a place to check our “Current operating status” – in other words, whether or not the church is open for services, in case of inclement weather (or unusual episodes like the sabotage of transformers a few years ago). If in doubt, check us out! Other options include Meet Our Clergy, Who We Are, Services and Office Hours, and How to find us.

All of these links can also be found by scrolling down the main page, as can also sections on “Find Your Place” – ministries of the parish, which you may wish to join – “Recent Media,” both video and audio, and “Recent Posts” on our nascent blog page. The goal is for this to become a “one-stop shop” for information about Christ Church Anglican.

If you have any questions or issues, please contact our media team at [email protected]. And if you wish to volunteer for our media team, please contact our IT/AV/Social media specialist, John Fesq, at [email protected]. Many thanks to John, for all the hard work he has put into this!

Announcements for the Week of October 20th, 2024

If you are visiting us: Welcome to Christ Church Anglican, Southern Pines! Thank you for being with us. We are very pleased to have you join us for the service, and hope that your worship here is a blessing to you. Please sign the guest book on the table in the narthex, and provide appropriate contact information. Include your email address in order to be placed on our parish email list: you won’t be bombarded with mail, but it’s a good way to keep in touch. And may God bless you!

Birthday Cards for David Colescott: Barbara points out that David Colescott will be reaching “the big 90th on Nov. 1st – if people could send him birthday cards he would really be surprised.” So, if you would like to surprise David for his 90th birthday, please send him a card!

No Wednesday Eucharist this week (23 October): Due to Fr. Tom’s attendance at the Diocesan Synod in Columbia, SC (see below), there will be no midweek service this week. Our usual 10 o’clock Eucharist (Holy Communion) will resume, Lord willing, next Wednesday, October 30th.

Diocesan Synod: The Annual Synod of the Diocese of the Holy Cross will be held on Wednesday, October 23rd – Thursday, October 24th. Fr. Tom will attend, Lord willing, as will George (in his capacity as a member of the Standing Committee of the DHC).

Relief for Western North Carolina – Samaritan’s Purse Appeal: Many thanks to those who have donated to the funds our parish will be sending to Samaritan’s Purse for the relief of the victims of Western North Carolina, and to any who may choose to do so. This appeal will continue for the remainder of the month of October. Samaritan’s Purse is a Christian humanitarian organization located in Boone, NC, in the heart of the area devastated by Hurricane Helene.

While everyone is of course free to donate as you see fit, we are collecting funds to donate to Samaritan’s Purse as a parish, in the name of Christ Church Anglican: please write “Hurricane Relief for Western NC” on your checks made out to our parish (or an envelope containing cash, if you so choose) and place them in the offering plate, or give them to our Treasurer, Bud Saulsbury, or to Fr. Tom. We will be collecting through the last Sunday of the month, October 27th. Thank you for your generous contributions to assist our neighbors to the west, who are dealing with devastation to not only their homes and livelihoods, but in many case, whole communities.

Additional options for relief donations are listed on our website and Facebook page. As regards in-kind donations, I am told that blankets and sleeping bags are particularly needed at present, as the weather is starting to turn decidedly cold in the mountains, with overnight lows dropping into the 40s and even lower. And of course, please continue to pray, both for those living and working in the affected area, and for those who are working to help them!

Fr. Tom will be in Maryland on Sunday, November 3rd, for a family (dual!) baptism: I have the honour and pleasure of being asked to officiate at the Baptisms of my latest grand-nephew and first grand-niece. This will also be an opportunity for a bit of a break, as I have not gotten the chance to take a vacation or spend much time with my family this year. I will be returning on Friday, November 8th, so there will be no midweek Eucharist that week, either. Many thanks for your understanding! – Fr. Tom

Blessing of the Hounds: Father Tom has once again been asked to officiate at The Blessing of the Hounds for the Moore County Hounds on Thanksgiving Day, November 28th. This is the third time he has been asked to perform this service. If you are able, please come out for that! It is a great event, and the public is welcome to attend.

Thursday, October 25th: Crispin and Crispianus, Martyrs (285) – “St. Crispin’s Day”
